Social Breakdown In The Great Gatsby
What are social breakdowns? A Social Breakdown is being unlike yourself when dealing with a social situation, relationships or yourself. A big part of social breakdowns are relationships. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald gives many examples when it comes to social breakdown.Throughout the story one can clearly see the breakdowns in most marriages and relationships. The Marriages had a lot of betrayal and issues, and many people were taken advantage of.
Many passages in The Great Gatsby explains how relationships weren't taken seriously during this time. Fights were common because people in The Great Gatsby weren't necessarily in a relationship where they liked the person that they were with, they were in the relationship for the money. “Most of the remaining women were now having fights with men said to their husbands”(Fitzgerald 51). This passage is an example of how much people argue and fought within their relationship. When fights and arguments happened in public, people went on with their day like it was a normal situation. Tom and Daisy had the most abusive relationship in the story. "Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(37). Tom hitting Daisy is an example of how abusive some of the relationships in this time were. Since nobody reacted to it made me wonder if this was something that happened daily or often.
