The Harlem Renaissance was a movement of artistic and social freedom for
African Americans. Beginning about 1914 and into the early 1930’s. The Harlem Renaissance was the beginning of African American culture in white America. What was the Harlem Renaissance? Where did it occur and who and what did it involve. “The Harlem Renaissance was a period of newfound and hard-won artistic and social freedom for African Americans.” (“Harlem Renaissance”). People say that the Harlem Renaissance inspired most of pop culture today. The Harlem Renaissance was one the most important events of African American history. “This cultural growth was centered for the most part in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. (Harlem Renaissance). “Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Paul Robeson, W.E.B. DuBois, and Cab Calloway were some key figures in the Harlem Renaissance.” (Harlem Renaissance). Gaining the alienable rights for all african americans was just as important breaking stereotypes. White allies helped pave the way to the Civil Rights Movement by using their political power. “Social issues, rather than arts and culture, became the focus of black leaders.” (Harlem Renaissance). The transition from the arts to social issues addressed the problems going on with blacks and whites. Blacks went from using their culture to gain acceptance within the community and outside it to fighting head on.
