Family is Power. Families are special in the way that members choose to protect one another, no matter what. This essentially means that family members empower one another. In the novel The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, the main character Starr Carter witnesses the police shooting her friend Khalil. Throughout the aftermath of this event, Starr is left shocked and horrified. Fortunately, her family is there to support her as she goes through this tough time. Her family chooses to stand by her, no matter what. Starr’s incredible story shows that true families are defined by the immense amount of love and loyalty that binds members together, which ultimately makes everyone stronger. As a result, Starr is able to feel more confident. Finally, the actions of her brother Seven also demonstrate what family really is. This starts when Starr’s friend Hailey isn’t very supportive of Khalil. She says many things that severely hurt Starr’s feelings. For example, she tells Starr that Khalil would’ve died anyway. Ultimately, tensions escalate and Starr starts throwing punches at Hailey. Things escalate even further when Hailey’s brother joins in to defend her. Starr’s brother Seven witnesses this and without further thought, he immediately jumps in to help Starr. Seven later tells her, “Dude came at my sister. I wasn’t gonna let him” (Thomas 348). Seven does this despite the fact that he could get in serious trouble, which did end up happening as everyone involved in the fight was given a suspension. Ultimately, Seven chooses to value family over himself, which shows the immense support that family members have for each other. This not only helped Starr in the fight, it also further strengthened their relationship.
