Bend 2 & 3 Theme Essay One theme that Steven from “Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie”, by Jordan Sonnenblick taught me is, sometimes, you have to put others first, especially when you know they are going through challenges, and need someone to be there for them. Throughout the beginning, middle and end, Jeffrey, Steven’s brother, goes through many challenges, and each time, Steven has to put Jeffrey first. He especially has to help Jeffrey when he finds out he is sick. This makes it hard on Steven, at school and at home. It even adds on to some of his friendship issues. He knows that his brother needs him, but he also knows, sometimes, it’s not going to be easy. This essay is about how Steven teaches us (through his experiences), that you should …show more content…

Hopefully, you too will understand how important it is to help others, even if you don't exactly want to. At the beginning of the book, Steven has to go out of his way to help his brother when he is going through challenges. For instance, on page 15, Jeffrey interrupted Steven’s drum practice and said he didn’t feel good and his “parts hurt.” So, as the big brother, Steven tried to comfort him and even made him some oatmeal. The text states that Jeffrey said, “Can you make me some moatmeal?” Jeffrey went on to talk to Steven, but in the end (of this page), Steven said yes. This shows Steven putting his brother first, because he knows Jeffrey needed someone there for him. He could have decided to go back to what he had been doing (practicing drums), nevertheless, he decided to put Jeffrey first. Another example from the beginning that goes along with the theme is on page 20, when Jeffrey got hurt and had to go to the emergency room. He was tired and absolutely …show more content…

For instance, on page 199, Jeffrey was talking to Steven about how a kid made fun of him for being bald (when you have cancer you have to go through chemotherapy, and you will most likely lose your hair). The text states that Jeffrey sadly said, “I didn’t want you to find out I was bald, too.” Steven knew Jeffrey was hurting, so he put Jeffrey first by shaving his own head. This shows how Jeffrey is going through a challenge (being bald and getting made fun of), so Steven was there for Jeffrey, and shaved his head. He could have just simply said, “you look fine,” but instead, he took it a step further and faced the challenge with him. Another piece of evidence from the end is on page 209, when Annette came up with an idea to raise money for Steven’s family, to help with Jeffrey’s medical bill. However, this caused Annette to tell the whole band about Jeffrey’s disease, even though Steven didn’t want anyone to know. This shows how Steven put Jeffrey first, because he didn’t get mad at Annette. Instead of thinking about himself, he put Jeffrey first, and agreed to the plan, so that his family could afford Jeffrey’s cancer treatment. One last piece of evidence to support my claim from page 216, is when Steven’s mom got sick, and it was up to his dad and himself, to take Jeffrey to the hospital. Steven has been stressed out lately, and could have
