Imagine, having that constant feeling of losing someone everywhere you go and not being able to do nothing about it. This is how Steven Alper from Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, feels about his little brother Jeffrey Alper. Steven Alper begins as a normal 7th grade student. But when his little brother gets hurt and is diagnosed with leukemia Steven’s life falls apart. He faces many challenges and is forced to confront them in any way he can. In order to survive, Steven spends significant time drumming, an area, which he is very talented in. Additionally, he also shows us his generosity throughout the story. He also portrays how worried he is do to the condition of his little brother, Jeffrey.

During the story Jeffrey’s condition is inconsistent he often feels good then suddenly tired. When the Alper’s decide to have some relatives over Jeffrey decides to play with his cousins. After a long afternoon for Jeffrey he decides to go to bed. Steven helps him get ready for bed as he notices something alarming on Jeffrey’s body. “His arms were an alarming welter of dark bruises … I just kept seeing Jeffrey’s arm over and over in my head. “ (174) This demonstrates the results of Jeffrey having a little fun for a while and makes Steven worry even more for Jeffrey. After, awhile Steven can’t take the horrific image out of his mind of Jeffrey’s bruised arm. Before even Jeffrey and his family knew he had cancer Jeffrey had an accident which would later on lead up to him being diagnosed with cancer. That morning Steven decided to sit his little brother on a stool and make him some “moatmeal”(as Jeffrey called it) When suddenly, little Jeffrey Alper had a great fall and a big bloody nose bleed. Since, Jeffrey was quit small he bursted out in roaring screams of crying. After, his nose didn’t stop bleeding Mrs. Alper decides to take Jeffery to the ER. As Steven heads to school he can't help anguish what little brother Jeffrey would be feeling right now. ” And I didn't really want to think too hard about it, because i knew he’d be terrified.” (28) This is all what Steven thinks on his way to
