While I read this week 's reading, The Heart of Boys, I was very intrigued and was able to relate to it quite a bit due to the fact that I was a competitive cheerleader for thirteen years. Being a cheerleader I have been around gay men pretty much all my life because almost all of the boys, with the exception of a few, who cheered at Indiana Ultimate with me were gay. Most of these guys are the stereotypical vision of a gay man because they have a very feminine demeanor, higher voices, show many emotions, and are quite affectionate in everything they do. I also have two brothers, so going from home to practice I have always noticed that my brothers and my gay guy friends at the gym have always been a little different in their demeanor.
The Heart of Boys reading really focused on how our society sees feminism as a weakness, especially in males because masculinity is seen as more important, stronger, and less emotional. With this being said, being gay in the United States is not always the easiest thing because if a guy is being affectionate with another guy in public a lot of people stare and do not know how to react. I realized the difference a lot when my gay friends, whom have not came out to their parents yet, acted in a different and less masculine fashion when their parents were not around. These acting patterns really showed me that when they are truly themselves and comfortable with people that know that they are gay, relate more with the female gender than their actual sex. The similarities between sex and gender became apparent when I was at home with my brothers because no matter who was around, they hardly ever showed emotion and acted masculine, resulting in their gender and sex complementing each
