The Power of Friendship: Changing Perspectives “Developing friendships plays an important part in life because friends help people see different perspectives, improving an individual's character”. The author of the book, The Hill, Karen Bass, represented this overall statement of the book by expressing to us in great detail how the characters' friendship improved them as individuals and saw how much of an impact sharing their perspectives had on their bond. At the beginning of the book, two boys, Kyle and Jared, get into a plane crash and end up stranded on an island with not much nearby except for a hill. He was able to have empathy towards Jared, helping create a stronger, more caring and respectful bond between the two. This built on Kyle’s character because he realized that he should never judge someone until getting to know them on a deeper level. This quote is a great representation of how a friend, Jared, can change someone else’s perspective, Kyle’s, in a positive way. In the book, Kyle reassures Jared by saying, “That’s a total bull. You've kept up with me for days, Jared. You saved me in the lake. Bravery is acting even when you're afraid”(Bass 231). This evidence demonstrates how Kyle is changing Jared’s perspective on himself by reminding him that he is brave and that he and Jared are on the same level. Throughout the book, Kyle’s character makes it very clear that he takes pride in his identity, however, he constantly puts Jared down, thinking he is better than him because of the way he grew up and how he has more survival skills. In relation back to my first point stated, after Jared explained his story to Kyle and the bond became stronger, that led to Kyle saying all these encouraging things stated in my quote such as, “You have kept up with me for days”(Bass,
