In Chapter 9 of Behind the Scenes, Elizabeth Keckley describes two very different reactions to liberty she witnessed while working among freed slaves. Some freedmen and freedwomen were miserable in the North, and even wished to return to their southern homes and their old lives. Others began building new homes and new lives for themselves, happy to be on their own and free. Keckley states that some slaves had exalted views of what freedom was going to be like.

Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we think we could be that strong.” In Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis Zamperini demonstrated Devers’ words with the utmost determination when, even life was rearing its ugly head, Louis never gave up hope and survived being stranded in the Pacific for 47 days. In all, Louie’s determination was one of his greatest virtues and his life saving quality that Hillenbrand described in his story.
Summary In the analysis, “Write For Your Life,” Anna Quindlen’s thesis is that in the movie “Freedom Writers,” and in our everyday life, physical writing is a necessary form of therapy and release. Quindlen describes the movie and then points out specific lines that express the situation of the children. She continues by explaining how physical writing is important to our wellbeing but how it has disappeared from our lives.
The Beauty in Breaking by Michele Harper is a memoir about Dr. Michele Harper. In this book, she discussed the ways that systemic racism finds its way into the healthcare system. In Chapter 5, Dr. Harper tells a story of a young Black man who refused to be examined after police brought him to the hospital. Had Dr. Harper not stood up for the young man, his right to refuse treatment would have been violated. This story is an example of how Black people's rights can be violated in healthcare.

Hiking in a single file line, slowest boy in the group, Herbie is defined as constraints in the process of hiking the trail. Alex find that because of Herbie’s extremely slow pace, it is impossible for Alex to keep the boys in single file line. Because of Herbie’s slow pace, the gap between the boys in front of Herbie and Herbie is created in the line. This overnight hike helps Alex to discover the theory of constraints.

Through his troubles as a child, emerged a strong-willed Olympic runner, who later became a military aviator. He was lost at sea and then captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. He endured years of abuse and suffering but still managed to stay true to who he was.
Imagine being a 17 year old African American kid always being judged just because of his skin color. Everywhere you go you feel like all eyes are on you, especially when you go to a school that only has eight black kids. That's exactly how Justyce McAllister felt in Dear Martin by Nic Stone. In the book, the main character Justyce goes through a lot of conflict involving his skin color. Even though he has a full scholarship at Braselton Preparatory Academy, and is a very smart student, he still gets judged.
The novel “The Haunting of Hill House,” written by Shirley Jackson, closely follows the traditional tropes of an American Gothic. The main character of the novel, Eleanor, begins her journey to self growth after accepting an offer to live in a suspected haunted house for the summer. Moreover, Eleanor meets three other people that have an important effect on her development as a person. These characters slowly begin to question their own sanity due to the house’s destructive nature. Jackson appeals to fans of the American gothic through her particular description of the house and how the characters interact with it in order to show the environments foil of an absolute reality.
