Back In 1920, there is a kind of believe that revolves around the American society during that period - people see alcohol as a bad thing, meanwhile they also think that the consumption of alcohol is bad, as it will lead to other troubles such as the rise of criminal activities. People also believed that by drinking alcohol, it will endanger American’s health, and lower an individual’s productivity. Therefore, the government ended up decided to crackdown on alcohol, and thus, the 18th amendment is created. December 17, 1917, the United States House of Representatives approve the 18th Amendment (which prohibit the manufacture, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages of any sort in the United States) with a vote of 382 to 128.A day later, the US Senate agreed on the Amendment with a vote of 47 to 8. A year after, over three-quarters of the fifty states ratified the Amendment. The 18th Amendment officially went into effect somewhere in the early 1920s. America became known as the dry country. This was followed by the Volstead Act that defined a drink as intoxicating if it contained more than 1% alcohol. This eliminated beer, wine, and other soft liquors. America later repealed the Amendment.

You have a majority of the population against prohibition because saloons were a social hangout for them where they hosted parties, weddings, etc. Then you have the rest of the population for prohibition because of economic, religious, and health reasons.
The 1920s were filled with gangs and many changes in society. One of the those changes was the addition of the 18th. The 18th amendment was ratified January 16, 1919. It created something called prohibition which outlawed the distribution, production, and use of alcohol. Despite the law, people still continued to drink alcohol in places called speakeasies.

Violence, riots, and domestic abuse are very common as a result of alcohol consumption. People of this time wanted a way to get rid of the negative effects of alcohol and what better way then to ban alcohol altogether? The 18th amendment says, “After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited”. Though the thought behind the amendment was good, people did not want to give up drinking alcohol. To many people, alcohol was a way to wind down and relax after a long day of working in the factories, which were generally very unpleasant in many ways.
Since the turn of the century, many people have denounced alcohol and the danger it has on society. In some circumstances, the idea of banning alcohol was a strategic mechanisms used during the war to “ keep the country patriotic, and thus strong “(McDonnell 394). Whereas in others alcohol is simply banned for religious reasons. During the 1920’s, Prohibition was, orthe Eighteenth Amendment, was the controversy that everyone had an opinion on. The first section of the Eighteenth Amendment states that after the first year of being ratified, “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol” or the product being imported or exported of the United States was hereby prohibited.
Lastly, Protestants thought the culture of drinking conflicted their religious morals. The eighteenth Amendment, which prohibited alcohol, was ratified on January 16th, 1920. An illegal alcohol market rose as a result. “Bathtub gin” was made with stills people bought from hardware stores, and “rumrunners” illegally transported alcohol. In 1924, rumrunners smuggled an estimated $40 million worth of liquor.

As a nation coming out of a devastating war, United States was in the midst of making major social changes in laws and regulations; one of the most prominent examples of this was the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. Originally, President Woodrow Wilson instituted a temporary wartime prohibition to save grain for producing move, but at the same year Congress decided to submit the 18th Amendment. In January 16, 1920, the National Prohibition Act went into effect. Although religious groups, politicians and social organisations advocated the idea of prohibition to reduce crime rate, solve social problems and improve public health, it did not lower the crime rate, it became a major source of corruption, and effected the US economy in a way that it was just a waste of money and time.
