The Horrifying Parallels between 1984 and Real Life Big Brother is watching the movie! Fortunately, this is only a reality in Oceania's dystopian society in George Orwell’s 1984. In this story, he depicts this society as having eyes watching you 24/7. George Orwell depicts Big Brother as a glorified government leader who oversees everything. George Orwell got this inspiration from Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union dictator. George Orwell also wrote about a dystopian class system that had three classes: proles were the lowest ranking, were very poor, and did not have many literate people. Like Big Brother, Stalin manipulated people and destroyed any traces of them. “Stalin manipulated/destroyed photos of their opposition (“Photographic Lies”).” Hitler also controlled people and the media. “Hitler controlled and manipulated the news media (Hsu).” In the book, three men are framed for something they didn't do. Big Brother made this happen, they framed these men for the government's crimes. “Ministry of Truth lies about Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford (Orwell 75-78,246-247).” Also in the book the Ministry of Truth lies about Comrade Ogilvy. Comrade Ogilvy is a made-up person that Winston created to help him change history at the Ministry of Truth. “The Ministry of Truth lies about Comrade Ogilvy (Orwell 44-48).” There are some other ways real dictators/BB nullify the freedom of speech.
