Dawn of an Impending Doom “We are all Oppenheimer, destroyer of worlds, Oppenheimer loved the world but nearly ended it. We each have the same power. What will you choose” (THESIMPLEHEART). Our daily choices can drastically impact the lives of thousands of people, and Oppenheimer's cautionary tale reveals that true power is deadly. As well as in the novel 1984, it cautions its readers by warning what true power can do to one's mind and body and the immense destruction it can cause. 1984 is a cautionary tale of oppressive governments due to big brother denying his citizens' rights and forcing them to live in darkness where the only light is death. This is shown when Winston, the protagonist of the novel, talks about the influence that the party has and this is said when he states, “Who controls the past,’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past”(Orwell 44). This demonstrated how changing past events can impact the future. Also, manipulation is a key part of the party since they need it to uphold themselves to the people. Another example of Big Brother gaining control is shown when the Oceanian government brainwashed children to become an extension of the party. This is demonstrated when Winston stated, “The children, on the other hand, were systematically turned against their parents and taught to spy on them and report their deviations” (Orwell 133). The fact that children are being brainwashed shows the power that the government holds against its own people. Individuality is an essential human right that has been worked on, only to be ruined by governments who want conformity. This infringes on the privacy of people, which creates an atmosphere of hate by the people towards the government, which creates distrust. Which will end up leaving people paranoid, which will create a dysfunctional government and democracy, which will cause a dystopian society. However, throughout recent history it has been shown that rulers can and will do anything to take control. As in enforcing conformity on its people to brainwash them into following them blindlesly like guinea pigs, and to make sure nothing bad will ever happen to
