In the book "Soldier's Heart" by Gary Paulsen, the character Charley Goddard experiences war in a way he never thought he would. The author uses these experiences to create an image of how horrid war really is, and how it is truly unacceptable. I designed my shoe based on these experiences Charley has. I designed my shoe around the ideas the author portrays in the book. I designed the laces, body, and sole of the shoe based on the principles the author proves. One of the main ideas the author portrays is how unnecessary war is, and Charley comes to this realization in the book. Charley says in the book "I am not supposed to see this, God. No person is supposed to see this. How can You let this happen?" (Paulsen, 25). He uses Imagery to create a picture in the reader's mind about the mental stress of war. Another device used to show this is metaphor when Paulsen says "Many of the men crouched as they moved, as if in a heavy rain, and Charley found himself doing the same, and when he was still some twenty yards from the line of trees ahead" (Paulen, 25). An example of this is where Charley trades with the rebel across the river. The rebel says "“Naw—it’s too cold to fight. I’ve got me some good cut tobacco over here. You got any coffee? We’re down to burned oats for coffee of a mornin’.” (Paulsen, 65). This shows how outside of war, they can interact like normal people, and not have to worry about killing each other. Furthermore, Paulsen says "Even in the moonlight he could see that the boy’s face was dirty. He thought, I probably look the same. But the Reb looked even younger than Charley." (Paulsen, 67).
