In the novel The House Of The Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, an important symbol is music. For Matt music represents individuality and comfort. The first support of this idea is in chapter nine when Matt tells us (the readers) what music does for him. "The ability to create music filled him with a joy too large to contain. He forgot where he was. He forgot he was a clone. The music made up for everything – the silent contempt of the servants, Steven's and Emilia's snubs, Tom's hatred" (90). This tells us that music is an escape for Matt from all of his worries and insecurities. He can forget the troubles of being El Patrón's copy and be his own boy. Music is when Matt feels most human.
