1. Summary: In this section of Fahrenheit 451, many interesting things happened. Montag kept bringing up Clarisse and what made her special. Mildred did not want to talk about Clarisse because she was dead and wanted to talk about someone who was alive. Montag wanted to learn why he was reading books and the purpose of them.
Will the clone Matteo Alacran escape or will his life be taken by a powerful drug lord? In the book the House Of The Scorpion wrote by Nancy Farmer is about a clone. The clone is ruled by a powerful drug lord who wants to use his body parts for his life. The greatest gift that you can give is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance.
In the story of The House of the Scorpion the main character is Matt and he is a clone. This story takes place somewhere in the future, in Mexico, and in a country called Opium. Matt has never met anyone other than Celia, until he gets to Opium. Throughout the story for Matt being a clone is a bad thing but the only thing that helps him is being owned by El Patron. El Patron is the ruler of Opium so everyone has to listen to everything he says.
How come people of higher class have supremacy? People in the lower classes have always followed the leadership of the higher class. Nancy Farmer’s novel, The House of the Scorpion, is exemplary of this imbalance of power in society. Matt is a clone of the drug lord, El Patrón, who rules a country called Opium. Matt’s purpose as a clone is to keep El Patrón alive by providing him with healthy body parts.
“But underneath Matt felt a hollowness” (Farmer 84). Throughout the book, The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, the main character, Matt, longs for acceptance and craves something that is not there. Matt does not feel accepted at the Alacrán estate because of his identity, but later accepts who is as a individual. Matt later escapes the Alacrán estate due to dangerous conditions, and later on, the Plankton Factory/Boneyard as well. Matt is insecure, therefore, creating many conflicts within himself and others as well.
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States claims, “We are as happy as we make our minds to be”. In Ray Bradbury’s science fiction novel, Fahrenheit 451, Mildred and Montag, a married couple live in a technologically advanced society where books along with any other items or activities that provoke thought are not allowed. Drowning in technology, the society absorbs in distractions such as television and earbuds that isolate themselves. Though Mildred claims she lives her life satisfied, she proves she rejects her unhappiness by escaping society with meaningless relationships, drowning in technology, and attempting to commit suicide.
We, as humans, are known for having the most complex minds in the history of the universe. Emotions, expressions, words and so many other ways we connect with one another, and yet there are still other concepts unable to put into words. Fahrenheit 451 is a crafty novel written by Ray Bradbury, about the corrupted sides of a superficial “perfect society,” or a Utopia as one might describe it. The main character, Guy Montag gradually realizes that the world he is living in was not at all perfect like it was displayed. The world of Montag is filled with temporary happiness, plastic-like emotions and overpowering technology, similar to our world and how people are growing dependent on a small screen along with the dropping methods of communication.
The House of the Scorpion In The House of the Scorpion, Matteo goes through a significant amount of character growth throughout the book. Matteo starts off as an extremely young innocent 7 year old boy. In his 7 years of living, he knows nothing about the outside world and has never met anybody other than his “mother.” His temporary mother keeps him in her home, and has kept him there for quite some time.
Matt’s quest through his adventure in the House of Scorpion was to find his true identity and make Opium a better place for everyone. Through this journey, Matt maps the definition of an archetypal hero because he enters both the known and unknown worlds, gets help from numerous people, and receives a gift of compassion which he uses to make Opium a better place. Matt’s lonely early years and an inherent curious nature compel him to connect with the outside world in his call to adventure when he sees Steven, Emilia, and Maria playing outside of the small cabin that both Celia and he lived in. At that point, Matt’s curiosity overcame the strict rules set by Celia, and he broke free. Matt’s call to adventure maps one of an archetypal hero because it propels him into the cruel, unknown world of Opium.
Music carries each and every one of us to a new awareness. It can reach to the innermost part of an individual. Music can envelope our emotions from tears all the way to our joy. It captivates and motivates. As I attended a concert on Saturday, November 7, 2015, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed with power and feeling to their audience.
Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
In 2016 our youth and society falls victim to the music industry and its impact on how we dress, dance and act. Music is a catalyst to allow others a glimpse into our minds. El Patrón is a drug lord who gained enough money and power to start a country (Opium). Matt has to learn live life in Opium (which is 100 years in the past) and to survive being a clone only created for organs. Although Nancy Farmer’s House of the Scorpion explores the themes of identity and science, it mostly conveys the theme of choices are made and consequences given.
“It was thirsty just now,” said Tam Lin. “If I hadn’t told it to drink, it would have stood in front of the trough until it died. Stay,” he told the horse. In the book House Of The Scorpion the character Matt’s goes through a lot of sudden changes and gets his dreams answered but not the answers that he wanted like people working all day without stopping unless told to do so. Which is causing conflict.
