In the House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza Cordero grows and changes her view of culture throughout the novel from the influence of the world and people around her. Esperanza is a multifaceted character, a person who appreciates her culture but also understands the necessity of English in her life, displayed through her actions in the script. Due to her wish to escape Mango Street, she shows a distaste for the Spanish language and views English in a more positive light. In the beginning, she expresses that she sees no reason for Spanish in her life, as most people at her school or in her future won’t understand her.
