“The House on Mango Street" is a Bildungsroman novel written by Sandra Cisneros. "The House on Mango Street" is about a 12-year-old girl who struggles with her identity and what type of person she wants to be in the future. Esperanza faces many problems and as she endeavors not to get stuck on Mango street. Neighborhoods and communtites are very important in life but they do affect a person to a minor degree if they are strong of chararcther and have a mighty conviction. An example of Neighborhoods and communities affecting a person to a minor degree is Esperanza and Alica. Esperanza and Alica still retain their strong and free personality even when the mango street community isn't very supportive of the freedom of females. This shows that even though the community and neighborhood environment doesn't encourage women to get an education and for them just to be housewives. Esperanza's mom still supports women getting a good education and getting their own things in life. This quote shows that Esperanza's mom isn't affected by the community by motivating Esperanza to get an education and being self-reliant even though this isn't what most of the community believes. When Esperanza is thinking about how she wants to be in the future she says something about her little sister Nenny. The author states "Nenny says she won't wait her whole life for a husband to come and get her"(88). This quote from the text shows how Nenny doesn't want to wait her whole life for a husband unlike the other women in mango street who just wait for a husband. this quote from the text shows that despite the mango street environment Nenny still manages to retain her self-reliance and want to do her own
