The story The House On Mango Street was published in 1983 by a female author going by the name of Sandra Cisneros. She was born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. Cisneros was influenced to write The House On Mango Street because of her childhood home that she used to live in. The main character, Esperanza, grew up very lonely with no friends. This relates to Cisneros because she also grew up very lonely and without friends. Cisneros and Esperanza are very alike, and this makes the book very interesting and enjoyable to read. The 3 literary devices that will be explained in this essay are similes, metaphors, and personification. The importance of these literary devices is so the vignettes can be worded in the story more smoothly and these literary devices can give off symbols in the book which can be used as themes. In The House On Mango Street, there are many literary devices. 2 important ones are found in the book, “Cathy’s house is like cat heaven, made perfectly for cats to enjoy” (Cisneros 13). A form of personification that the author uses in the vignette “Hairs” is “Papa's hair is like a broom, always standing up… my hair is lazy, it's always down” (Cisneros 6). Another form of personification in this vignette is “Mama's hair is all pretty, it's little rosettes always curled up like candy and pretty because she pinned it in pin curls all day” (Cisneros 6). These two annotations describe the hair in the family, and how everyone has different hair patterns and hair types, but at the same time, everyone is in the same family and all related.
