Biography of Sandra Cisneros Sandra Cisneros, the author of “The House on Mango Street,” was born on December 20, 1954. Sandra grew up within a Mexican family with a large number of siblings. At a young age, she had to experience moving to different locations several times. Since she was relocating more than once, it brought a great deal of frustration to her. As soon as she started to make friends and know the area, she would have to move and forget everyone. These experiences were part of her popular novel and it showed how horrible these events can be towards a person. After a long period of time Sandra realized she was a great writer and she graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. It is through her experiences that she wrote about that other authors cannot capture. The literature that she created was all from her life events and she tried to make it as similar to her life as possible. For example in her most popular novel she discusses about her early childhood where she has to let go of her friends. This connects to her life because when she was younger she had to forget her friends because of the moving process. She also incorporates the culture she grew up with in her literature. For example in her story, “Eyes of Zapata” she provides a few Spanish words in several sentences because she feels it would take away the real meaning of the word if It was translated. Most writings that are translated into another language lose their true meaning. Sandra also revolves many of her writings about femininity. She is a very strong independent woman as she was growing up and she feels as though more women should stand up for themselves.
