The Hunt It’s cold and dark, the moon is in the sky from last night. It’s quite, and peaceful, the birds haven’t began to sing yet, and dawn is just beginning to break. I can feel the burn of the cold on my face, but the pain fades as I settle into my stand. It’s early November, the time when the case begins; the chase, that drives animals mad to fulfill their natural need to procreate. This same chase that drives me to the hunt. The wait… The rush. The adrenaline! The first sight of light breaks through the sky, just barely licking the tops of the trees. I find so much clarity in moments like these, I have never be so at peace. Oddly enough, I am sitting out here in freezing weather, waiting to ambush an animal, and the strongest emotion I feel is peace. I always feel this way though, on every hunt I feel peace. Peace in nature, peace in the quite of the woods, and peace in my own mind. Its spiritual actually, the whole world just slips away and I can finally see the world without distractions. I went with my uncle and his friend Goobie. I remember the drive across the bridge and going down this long road. We stopped next to a red barn and crossed the road. I looked at my uncle and said, “Do you think I’ll actually get one Uncle Rick?” He said “I guarantee you that you will!” I was so excited and nervous, all at the same time. I followed my uncle down a trail to where we were going to sit. There was a spot, on the ground, next to a few trees. We settled in and waited, and waited for what seemed like forever! I swear it felt like I had been sitting there for 8 hours. Let me give you some background. It was January, early January actually and it was cold, but cold is an understatement! It was frigid! I kept sitting, fighting the urge to shiver out of my skin. I was beyond anxious to see a deer, which at this point didn’t seem like that was going to happen. So, I kept waiting, then finally my uncle, who was sitting to my left nudged me and pointed to the far corner of the field. There I saw two deer, a very large buck, and what seemed to be a doe, they were about 150 yards out. Instantly my heart began to beat so fast I thought it was going to burst through my rib cage! I drew my gun and rested on my uncle’s shoulder. “Shot the doe first, then if the buck stays you can shot him too,” my uncle whispered.
