I believe there were three main types of conflict. Man against man, man against the environment, and man against himself. In the beginging of this story, the narrator clarifies ,as their present state is of peril, due to the war between the British soldiers, who are accompanied by American colonists, and the French forces, in which who employ Native American soldiers. At one time the British were chief, but they have recently lost major battles in the American colonies. This was due in large part to the lack of canniness and the less rigid war tactics of the American Indians. They continue to Fort William Henry, to take the Munro sisters to their father. A hidden figure (Montcalm) suddenly emerges from the main French tent, and heads beyond the farthest outpost. He then goes to stand against a tree near the western water bastion of the fort. Just as the huge form of Munro appears on the rampart, the dark profile of Magua comes from the lake shore and raises a rifle toward the Scotsman. Montcalm stops him just in time. Magua sullenly explains his reason for revenge, but he then leaves, but not before stating, that he "knows how to speak to a Huron warrior." Later, the massacre is over. The stench of death fills the heavy August air. Suddenly, five men appear together walking out of the forest into the field. They are in such disbelief, the horrors they are witnessing, as they search the grounds now covered with lifeless bodies. In all war and fighting experience, they have never seen such carnage. Magua has reached the neighboring tribe of the Delawares where Uncas, Alice, Heyward, and Hawkeye are hiding. It is also with the Delawares that Cora has been placed as Magua's captive. Although there is reason for a victory celebration, as the Delaware have either killed or frightened away the Huron, there is no sign of gaiety in
