The idea of government is not a new phenomenon in recent centuries, it was not invented overnight by the Framers who wrote the Constitution, the idea of government has gone through thousands of years of trial and error to what we now know it as today. Throughout the world's history, different philosophers have argued how they believe a government's roles and purposes are, what a constitution’s nature is, and what the advantages of limited and unlimited government are. Politics is the decision making part of government that decides how it will rule over the people. Politics are exceptionally interesting because people disagree. They disagree on how resources should be distributed, what freedoms people should have, and what issues are most important. One of the main disagreements is what government spendings should be spent on such as education, welfare, or defense. Although people do not always agree and have different wants, they recognize that they need to work together to influence the laws. Politics is really the process of resolving disagreements between multiple views. The term ‘politics’ though, is thought of by many people as a filthy word. People reflect the word with images of trouble and even violence. They identify the word as misleading and deceptive. These misconceptions of politics leads to citizens not trusting their politicians and can add tension across a whole nation. Government is a group of people that oversees a nation or community. Governments make, pass, and are responsible for enforcing laws. They protect inhabitants from threats of other countries, manage currency and may set tax rates, and a variety of other duties. These duties may differ from government to government as different types have dissimilar way of ruling over their people. There are five main types of government; monarchy, democracy, oligarchy, totalitarianism, and autocracy. A monarchy is a type of government were one family has power and rules from generation to generation. Monarchies were the most common form of government until roughly the 19th century. The most familiar example of a monarchy is the United Kingdom. The queen and the royal family have roles in the government but do not make up laws governing the people. Another form of government is a democracy. Democracies are a form of government where the power is given to the people. The most familiar form of a democracy is the United States of America. The people elect the president and representatives to run the country. The next form of government is a oligarchy. In an oligarchy the power resides with the upper class or dominant group in the society. These people are either the wealthiest, most educated, or have the most military control.
