The identity of Scout Finch
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). The author of this novel is Nelle Harper Lee. She goes by Harper Lee, she didn’t want people to mispronounce her first name to be Nellie instead of Nelle. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee tries to explain all of the discrimination there was at that time. “Miss. Caroline, he’s a cunningham” I sat back down. “ What, Jean Lousie?” I thought I had made things significantly clear. It was clear enough to the rest of us: Walter Cunningham was sitting there lying his head off”( Lee 22 .) This shows us that Scout is not afraid to say what is on her mind about people. Say nothing, and as sure as eggs he will become curious and emerge. Francis appeared at the kitchen door. " You still mad Jean Louise?” he asked tentatively” ( Lee 95 ). With this quote it explains that Scout may have a lot on her mind, and a lot she wants to say, but at the end of the day she knows that they were family and she could not actually do anything to hurt them. Due to Scout punching her cousin, she gets in trouble with her uncle. Her uncle lets her explain after some time has passed, she finally explains to uncle Jack that her cousin was making fun of Atticus. In which she would not let happen right in front of her face. This proves that back in the day this would even pull families apart. Scout hated how people would talk about Atticus, and it was even worse when her own cousin was talking bad about Atticus. Scout understood that she should not have
