Birth control has been used for thousands of years. Birth control is any method that can be used to prevent conception, or a pregnancy. There are many different types of birth control for both genders (male and female). The first type of birth control is a Birth Control Implant (Implanon and Nexplanon). This Birth Control Implant is a small plastic stick that is surgically inserted into a woman’s arm to prevent pregnancy. How does it work? Simple, it works by releasing the hormone progestin every month which prevents the ovaries from releasing an ovum (egg). If there are no ovas produced, there is nothing to be fertilized by sperm, thus pregnancy will not occur. Birth control pills are pills that have to be taken daily in order to prevent pregnancy. The pills are a form of oral contraception. Once again, birth control pills work by releasing hormones (progestin and estrogen) into the body that prevent the ovaries from releasing ova (eggs) and thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from passing. Birth control pills are very effective if they are taken correctly and on the right time each day. Less than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they take the pill correctly. But as every medicine, the pill also has side effects. These effects include: bleeding between periods, breast sensitivity, nausea and vomiting. These side effects often go away after a while of using the pill. But, the pill also has advantages and can be taken for other reasons apart from birth control. These benefits are: protection against acne, breast growths, bone thinning, infection, ovarian/endometrial cancers, bad cramps, and irregular/heavy periods. Women who are: overweight, over 35, have diabetes or other disorders, smoke, or need prolonged bed rest, may find that the pill is not as effective for
