Cats’ Magic Potion
Why do we all associate cats with cleanliness? Cats clean themselves frequently and use their tongue to lick their bodies clean. We spot them cleaning themselves everyday and almost anywhere. Sometimes they even lick other cats clean. Moreover, cats spend 50% of their waking hours licking themselves. Surly this is too much time just to make themselves clean. Indeed cats lick themselves not only to make themselves clean, but also for a variety of different reasons. We can almost say that a cat’s life depends on its ability to lick itself. Cats lick themselves in order to control odors, stay healthy, and to socialize and de-stress.
For cats, manipulating their scent is very important. They protect themselves, claim their property, and make themselves comfortable through producing and removing their scent. Cats lick themselves to get rid of their scent so that threatening animals or the cat’s prey cannot smell them. Cats are quite solitary animals, and they do not do much to make friends. However, they do lick their few companions’ hard to reach spots as doing a favor to them. For cats to lick humans or toys, the cats and the human or toy must have a very good relationship, and the cats also think that they are doing a favor to their humans or toys. After a long day, cats might lick themselves to de-stress and to calm down. Humans do similar things like spending a long time filling in coloring books or meditating.
