Should cheerleading be a sport? We’ve all seen cheerleaders at football and basketball games, flying in the air, doing 4 flips at a time, yelling at the top of their lungs, rooting for their team. But what you don’t know is that cheerleading and their shiny pom- pom’s are not an actual sport. You’d think it be a sport with all the competitions, and the number of accidents. Cheerleading has more accidents than gymnastics, and gymnastics is considered a sport. So should those girls with the sparkly outfits and the bright pom poms be considered a sport

Cheerleading is one of the highest fatal injuries in the world. In 2016 66.7% of all females (10 -18) get injured (fatal injuries) from cheerleading, compared to in 2013 with 59.4%. Cheerleading is one of the leading source of injuries from high school to college level. “At the high school and college level.” Dr. Samantha Rosman a Boston- area pediatrician, told AMA delegates, during floor debate before the vote. “ These girls are flipping 10,20 feet in the air,” Rosman said. “ We need to stand up for what is right for our patients and demand they get the same protection as their football colleagues. But when you think about it girls work very hard to get on the cheerleading team or be qualified. Though they argue that high school cheerleading especially shouldn’t be a sport , I can see where they're coming from but some high school cheerleaders actually compete. People oppose that cheerleaders don’t work hard , and they don’t have long enough practices. But cheerleaders go to practice on average 4 hours a day 6 days a week, and that’s a lot saying that they need to be social with their family and finish homework.
