Why Cheerleading Should be Considered a Sport No matter how much you have cheered in the past, if you have ever been a cheerleader and someone brings up the conversation whether cheer is a sport or not, all cheerleaders will get riled up to defend their sport. The majority of people who spark the question are just trying to irritate cheerleaders. I am a cheerleader at Burley High School and let me tell you, it takes so much hard work, time, and dedication. I have personal experience being a cheerleader. When people tell me that cheerleading isn't a sport, I get upset. Cheerleaders work harder than the majority of other high school athletes. If you don't think that it takes an athlete to become a cheerleader you need to think again. In the dictionary it says, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. What I just explained to you is the perfect example of what a sport is. Therefore, cheerleading is a sport. After tryouts, and if you make the cheerleading team, you sign a contract for the whole year. The contract either includes being on a competition team and a sideline team, or one or the other. Some teams do not have a competition team, which is where all the hard work comes in. A competition team puts in probably five times the amount of a cheer team that only does sideline cheerleading. If you are on a competition team you spend all year preparing three routines that you will compete with. So much time and preparation goes into a total of five and a half minutes of routine at competitions. Along with those three routines, you also cheer on the sidelines. A sideline team takes care of all of the other sports, including school spirit, pep rallies, and leading the team to victory. When you are in high
