Laugh a Little Why couldn’t the sleepy bicycle stand up on its own? Because it was two tired! [insert smile or eye roll here] We are constantly surrounded by humor every day of our lives. Whether it is a funny picture or video, a joke your friend told you, or a TV show or movie, comedy is all around us. It is something that is integrated into our society as a part of our everyday life (O 'Hara). It is a part of life itself that has completely changed the course of American history. If you think about it, we might not even be here if it weren’t for the ability to laugh, or the people who make us laugh. From the 1930s to present day, comedy has helped people persevere through troubling times, challenged social standards, and educated Americans on political influence. There have been many pitfalls in our history from which we have recovered, but not many know that comedy has played a significant role. During the Great Depression, comedy and film played an important role in helping Americans repair from the economic struggles they faced. “‘They were a wonderful escape,’ said veteran actor and director Norman Lloyd. ‘People would go into the theater, in this darkened cavern, and it took them out of themselves. They could fantasize about what happened on the screen, about those beautiful stars that existed then’” (Bowen).
