The movie beautiful creatures takes place in the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina .The community is shaken by the arrival of the town patriarch’s niece Lena Duchannes. Macon Ravenwood welcomes his niece Lena into his home full of mystery and secrets. The Ravenwood family’s reputation of being involved in occult magic had haunted the town of Gatlin long before Lena’s arrival, however her presence alone stirred up more than just the curiosity of her fellow classmates. Lena is very standoffish at the beginning of her relationship with Ethan she makes it very difficult to get close to her and she requires Ethan to give some self-disclosure before she is able to reveal her true emotions to him. Lena is more distant in her communication with Ethan. She often uses vague or abstract language with mostly everyone in the movie because her character is withdrawn and quiet. Along with Lena’s quiet nature she often sends mixed messages that are contradictory by try keeping her true emotions bottled up behind a cool, calm exterior although still expressing her anger. Other times Lena just outright expresses her anger freely. This can be seen as a form of a disagreeing message that is known as aggressiveness. Aggressiveness is defined as put-downs, sarcasm, taunting, yelling, picking (all methods of “winning” disagreements at others expenses. In one particular scene at the beginning of the movie, this is behavior can be observed when Ethan is offering to help Lena get out of the rain by offering her a ride to her house. After being drenched in rain and almost ran over by Ethan’s car Lena immediately responds in an aggressive manner and starts taunting Ethan with sarcastic put-downs in the form of stereotypes. Ethan offers her a ride by pointing out the fact that she’ll drown in the rain if she doesn’t take him up on his offer. Lena responds by saying “you’re one of them aren’t you? Some type of all American jock, prom king?” Ethan quickly brushes off Lena’s attitude with a titanic joke about the rain in an attempt to lighten the mood of the conversation. Once again.
