SETTING GOALS It is common for a coach to have no clue what students or parents want. Parents and players don´t know what they want either a lot of times. Junior players need to have good communication with their coach. Coaches also need to have good communication with their juniors. All different types of communication are necessary here. Obviously, verbal communication is one of them, in the form of conversation. But also consider e-mail, texting or hand-written materials; such as notes on sticky pads as well as any of the social media means of communication. Even hand signals or facial expressions are good sometimes. These goals must be in writing and need to be shared and agreed on by all members of the team. Goals that are well thought out and realistic are great motivators for the day-to-day player. This is the kind of stimulus that makes a player go to the gym, hit Tennis balls for hours on end, go to bed early, and eat right. Here is a list of goals to choose from for junior players. They can put check marks by the ones they intend to pursue. It is a good idea to do this at the beginning of the year, print the form, throw it in the Tennis bag, and look at it every week, to make sure to stay focused on our new year Tennis resolutions.
