It may be a person’s right to speak his mind even when what he or she is saying is disgusting or ignorant, but there is a time and place for it. The university is a place of learning and everyone who has attended has paid tuition. Everyone deserves to learn in an environment that is not hostile or fearful. Any speech should be allowed except hate speech because universities are a place of learning with diverse student bodies. Hate speech is speech that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. Hate speech could disrupt the learning process and create an environment where students feel afraid, be unable to speak up, or feel as if their thoughts and ideas are not as equally as value. Traditionally free speech can be very offensive no matter how terrible the words might be. I say this because some people of color can take thing to the next level, for example when people say “All lives matter" instead of “black lives matter” they either get really angry or upset because the saying was created to spread awareness about police brutality on color people. Also, When a feminist has an opinion and she shares it out basically if you do not agree with her you are offending her which is basically hate speech towards them then she will start to get angry at you. Hate speech can cause discrimination against gays because they might feel that cannot openly express their sexuality without being judge and that is a big deal for them. An example of this is when Hompton University was denied official recognition for students seeking to start a gay or lesbian group on campus.
