In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Odysseus’ Journey to Heroism The Odyssey is an epic poem by Homer, set in 800 B.C between Ithaca and Troy. This epic poem portrays Odysseus, the king of Ithaca’s journey back from Troy. Penelope, Odysseus’ wife waits for him at home along with their son, Telemachus. Suitors think that Odysseus has died, so they harass Penelope and Telemachus because they want to become king.
In one of the oldest pieces of literature, The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus is a heroic and admirable commander that goes beyond his own duties to protect his men and return home to his beloved Ithaca. Although some readers think Odysseus is ignorant and a braggart, I believe he is a strong leader and an admirable wartime hero. Even though he is not flawless, Odysseus preservers through many obstacles and remains determined throughout the book. Odysseus has clearly shown both leadership and tactical thinking for instance when he devised a plan to escape the Cyclopes’ cave, respecting Elpenor’s dying wish, and slaying a stag to feed his men. Heroism and leadership can be defined in many different ways.
In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald and another version translated by Samuel Butler, Odysseus journey is relevant to today because he had to leave for war in Troy for ten years and then for another ten years had to get himself and his men home leaving his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope behind in Ithaca; in 2015 some fathers go off to war and are gone for so long that are considered dead or missing in action and have to find their way back; then when they come back everything get’s changed around. Some of the challenges Odysseus faced were sea monsters (Scylla and Charybdis), cyclops, going to and from the land of the dead, lotus eaters, getting stuck on islands with strange women, sirens, etc. (not in order). Men that have gone MIA/considered dead would have to have faced pirates if they were trying to get back home overseas, enemy’s capturing them, being shipwrecked, etc.
Imagine going on a journey and not knowing the potential obstacles that will come up along the way. Characters or real human beings do not always know what is going to happen on their journeys nor do they know the consequences that may arise. A journey sometimes results in losing loved ones for a single chance for something good to come out of it. The people that complete a goal during these journeys have to be strong and brave. Two people that relate to this type of journey are Odysseus in the story of The Odyssey written by Homer, and John Kuol from the story “Escaping Death”.

Odysseus sends three of his best men to check out this island, but bad luck has them and they run into Lotus Eaters who are addicted to the Lotus Plant. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.
