The author means that our personal and professional reputations are based and how the public perceives us. The public sees our daily actions and they see how we interactions with other people. We are always around people while living our normal lives or while we are at work. The decisions we make in from other people will help them determines our reputation. It might be a good reputation, a responsible, caring person always willing to do the right doing, or it could see us as unreliable.
