The earliest known fashion photographs date back to the 1850s. Photography used for advertising had not become popular until the early 20th century when fashion started to be accessible to a larger audience. Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue were the first fashion magazines in the late 1800’s . These magazines were first illustrated by hand until Condé Nast had hired Baron Adolph De Meyer in 1913 to shoot portraits of models, actresses, and aristocrats for Vogue. Magazine importance became bigger in the early 20th century due to collaborations with well known designers. In the 1920s and 1930s photography had helped Chanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, and Lanvin become known for their extraordinary styles. Paris was the main palace of fashion in the world during this time so photographers such as Horst, Man Ray, Beaton, Steichen, and many more made sure to be there. By the mid 1950’s studio shots and elegance of models in earlier fashion photography had a new aesthetic that was more spontaneous. Photographers were idolizing what seemed to be flawless beauty on models during advertising campaigns and television commercials. Today, one of the most impressive change in fashion photography is the new strategy that the fashion marketers have learned. The use of digital images allowed for escaping everyday reality and enter a world of high fashion, celebrities and beauty.
