Manufacturing processes are organized using the following concepts and techniques: Process selection and the five patterns of work flow (project lay-out, work center, manufacturing cell, assembly line and and continuous process) (Jacob & Chase, 2014, pp. 149-151). Process selection involves deciding which production process will specifically be used in producing a product or service. For instance, for mass production with very high customer demand, the use of assembly line is more appropriate. However, for low production volume, the use of manual assembly of workers can be less costly (p. 149). For instance, drilling equipment is placed in one location, while stamping machines are placed on the other side. In this way, the movement of materials is optimized, saving time and effort. Take for example a toy factory: it has different areas for “shipping and receiving,” plastic shaping and stamping, metal shaping, “sewing” and “painting.” These areas are adjacent with one another to simplify time and production processes (pp. 149-150). The manufacturing cell lay-out and the assembly line are also two patterns of work flow. The manufacturing cell lay-out gathers in one production area products that undergo similar manufacturing requirements. This type of lay-out is usually used for metals, computer chips and assembly work. Moreover, the assembly line involves production processes that are set-up based on the series of steps required to produce a product.
