1 INTRODUCTION Scientific writing is an essential skill every researcher should be proficient in as it will determine the success and effectiveness of any writing submitted. According to Brink et al. (2012:126) philosophers make use of argumentation when analysing concepts or reaching conclusions or assumptions. The aim of writing an academic essay is to argue a particular point or view and to convince the reader of the importance of the topic being argued through the provision of evidence. In scientific writing it is described as a disagreement substantiated by evidence in support of one’s argument. It is usually the result of individuals having an opposing view. Rossouw (2003:38) defines an argument as an “instrument that is used to justify claims”. The aim of an argument is to persuade others to accept that the claims being made is reasonable and just. 2.4 Types of argument patterns Rossouw (2003: 43) identifies five argument patters indicating different relationships between a premise and a conclusion.
