The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
Last month, we learned the Missouri Compromise, the Monroe Doctrine and American System. These three events were important for me to review against, I deem. The Missouri Compromise was worked out in 1820. The Congress had a serious problem about balance. Missouri became one thing that could break this balance.
Traveling for trade’s or for visit was a lot more faster after the steamboat was invented. It was a lot more easier to travel upriver and going against its current. Before the steamboat was even invented, they took more time and a lot more energy when going up steam or against the current. The use of steam speed up the efficient transportation of perishable good and trades. Steamboat was extremely valuable during the civil war.
The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. The U.S. paid fifty million dollars and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million dollars which averages to less than three cents per acre. The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, portions of Minnesota, large portions of North Dakota; large portions of South Dakota, parts of New Mexico, the northern portion of Texas, the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. The Louisiana Purchase was smart move by the United States.
It also gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most important Battles of the Civil War, and it helped speed up the end of the long fought war. It also let the north go into the deep south so they could eradicate the “Rebels”. It split the Confederacy in half. It made it easier to defeat the “Rebels” when they were not able to communicate with their other half.
Why was the Siege of Vicksburg such an immense turning point for the Union in the Civil War? This mainly was due to the capturing of the Mississippi River, which contained the South’s main ports for trading with foreign countries. Capturing the Mississippi demolished the Confederate’s leading position in the Civil War. This great achievement for the Union helped change the outcome of the war.
Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, so when it was captured by the Union, it completed the second part of the Northern strategy of the Anaconda plan. The Confederates had a geographic advance, but the Unions advantage of supplies helped them win the Battle of Vicksburg. The North’s advantage in supply affected the battle hugely. The North held most of the advantages when it came to money and resources.
During this time period there was many writers writing both for and against the South. A major person in history, Thomas Jefferson, would write against the North and for the South. That is only one of many example from back then, but at this time some of the greatest critics of the South were from the South. Some people believe the South has such a long memory on the civil war because they lost, and even though some people in the current South want many of their peers to just forget about that time in history, many will not give it up.
The Northern States were against slavery and the Southern States were not. Slavery was such a big issue back then because for the South that was their way of living and how they made money. For the North, they viewed it as an immoral thing and that there shouldn’t be slavery in the U.S. Other factors beside slavery caused the South to leave which lead to the Civil War. The Southern States seceded from the Union because of slavery, political issues, and economic differences.
The Gettysburg and Vicksburg were the turning points in the civil war because during these wars, the Confederate Army lost most men and also lost control over their last fort around the Mississippi River which caused the confederate states to be completely divided into two. Vicksburg liberated the Mississippi, ended the war in the West, and enabled Grant to go to the rescue of the Army of the Cumberland in Chattanooga. Gettysburg ended Lee 's hopes of invading the North, and rendered his army incapable of effective action for many months.

The Civil War resulted due to the division and the gradual collapse of the Union between the two sections. It can be argued that both the North and South were distinct regions. However, both regions initially displayed nationalism in various ways at the beginning of the Civil War. Southern nationalism allowed the Confederates to justify their secession and independence. The formation of the Confederacy and the established Confederate Constitution in February 1861, nationalism validated their status as an independent country.
