Throughout Persepolis, Marjane becomes her own person as she grows into a young adult. From biased religious beliefs, hardships through war and violence, and educated parents. Persepolis is a novel by Marjane Satrapi, written about her struggles and successes of growing up in Iran. Marjane, the main character, forms her personality and beliefs throughout this intriguing novel.
As a girl growing up in Iran, Marjane is influenced by strict religious rules about hijabs, limited education, and few freedoms for women and girls. Because of these circumstances, Marjane moves away from her beliefs and faith in the Koran. At the start of the book when Marjane is young she is influenced by religion and looks to God as a role model. She would talk to God before bed and ask him questions. “Every night I had a big discussion with God'' (Satrapi 8). But after the execution of her uncle Anoosh, she did not talk to God again. “I never want to see you again!! Get out of my life!! GET OUT!!!” (Satrapi 72).
