Two Friends and The Interlopers Comparison Introduction: The story “The Interlopers” by Saki and “Two Friends” by Guy de Maupassant have a plethora of similarities and differences. The following analyzes both stories and compares and contrasts them using the seven elements of fiction. Setting: The story "The Interlopers" takes place by the Carpathian Mountains (the mountain range that starts in Slovakia and extends through Poland, Ukraine, and Romania). During “The Interlopers”, the main characters (Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym) that despise each other with all their hearts, are out in a “dark forest”, where a storm is raging on. These two characters are noticeably alike, both have a deep passion for fishing and they purely just desire peace and are infatuated with nature, consequently, they have a deep bond of friendship that cannot be broken easily. In the story, it states, “...Some days they did not speak; at other times they chatted; but they understood each other perfectly without the aid of words, having similar tastes and feelings…”. This demonstrates their connection and correlation. In the story, “The Interlopers”, the two main characters are Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. These two characters are eminently alike in the sense of their hatred and despise toward each other. In the story, it states, “...The neighbor feud had grown into a personal one since Ulrich had come to be head of his family; if there was a man in the world whom he detested and wished ill to, it was Georg Znaeym...”. This quotation represents the hate Ulrich von Gradwitz has towards Georg Znaeym (and of course vice versa).
