The British were very irritated with the colonists of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1774, the British Prime Minister reported to Parliament what the colonists of Boston have done. He states, “The Americans have tarred and feathered your subjects, plundered your merchants, burnt your ships, denied all obedience to your laws and authority; yet so clement and so long for bearing has our conduct been that it is cumbet on us now to take a different course. Whatever may be the consequences, we must risk something; if we do not, all is over.” Parliament then decided to make laws for Boston. Britain’s House of the Lord’s helped issue this series of laws. They called these laws The Coercive Acts. After Boston found out about this, they were furious. They started calling the laws The Intolerable Acts, intolerable meaning unbearable or painful. But what did Boston do that makes them need more control? There was an event called The Boston Tea Party. During this event, Boston dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This is the reason why Britain was irritated with Massachusetts. In response to these acts, some of the people of Boston wrote poems and essays about the government’s decisions. The colonists believed that these laws violated their rights. All this conflict caused King George III to compromise that either Britain masters the colonies or they leave them. General Gage, military leader of the French and Indian War, became the new British commander and the new governor of Massachusetts. This all happened in
