He himself even says "I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive." He eventually found himself reading about the Nation of Islam, and this also caused his view of the world to change, as before he was an atheist but now he followed the advice of another man who came after him, and went on to "find god". This changed his life because he wanted to let go of his old ways forever and he did join the Nation of Islam and he became a Muslim. His overall perspective of the world changed as he now appreciated his freedom as he says himself in this quote, “It is only after slavery and prison that the sweetest appreciation of freedom can come.
