The Invisible People The authority structure of the invisible people is very different from the authority structure of the American society. In the American society, people must abide by a set of rules and laws and if one does not respect those laws they will face consequences. On the contrary the invisible people live in a society where they are not told what to do, they do not have laws that they have to follow, as implied by the chief’s statement “If I told a man to do what he does not want to, I would no longer be chief”. According to the influential sociologist and philosopher Max Weber, the American society has a legal-rational authority, which means the authority is constructed in clearly defined laws. Their authority structure plays a role in their happiness, members of their community knows what to do without being told so, gives the people a sense of independence. They are a perfect sharing community. All food acquired is shared among the members of the community. They live in perfect harmony with their environment. The environment provides with food, water and dignity. They do not have to pay to take a bath, for food, and even to drink water. They can eat anywhere for free. They support, love and look after each other. A lot of that is possible because they are a small group, and there’s no greed. People are much happier when they do not have personal properties and virtually no possessions. Where as in the American culture, individuals have to worry about paying for the basic humans needs, such as food, shelter. This results in stress and mental disorders such as depression, anxiety. The invisible people satisfies the basic human needs which are biological and Physiological needs like air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sleep, this comes from nature. Safety needs - protection from elements, security, stability, which comes from the chief. Love and belongingness needs - friendship, intimacy, affection and love, - from work group, family, friends, romantic relationships. Esteem needs - self-esteem, achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, and managerial responsibility, which is the result of the chief not telling his people what to do and instead trusting that they know what to
