Gogol was actually mocking the purposeless world as a whole. In Gogol’s point of view, the entire Russian society was nonsense and chaos. There was a nose found in the bread, a nose grew up into a human and a nose refused to grow back on the face. It feels like there was unexplainable supernatural phenomenon happened around the world. Because apparently nose has been just a nose on the face, there was no way for a nose to become a real person. In the Gogol’s story, nothing about the bizarre incident was ever explained.
