In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.
Kaylee Satterwhite Professor Murphy English 1101 October 30,2016 Into the Wild In the book Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer focuses on naive Chris McCandless. McCandless isolates himself from the world and goes soul searching to find who he really is in hopes of finding peace. McCandless grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and he is very talented both in sports and his academic work. At an early age Chris shows a love for the outdoors and has a very adventurous side of him that the rest of his family can see .
The First Decision Reef, the main character in the novel, The First Stone, by Don Aker, makes a bad decision and ultimately has to deal with the consequences. To begin, Reef latches his anger onto a stone and deliberately throws it over an overpass into oncoming traffic. The stone causes a major accident between not one, but several cars and severely injures a teenage girl. Fortunately for Reef, the Judge sentences him to live at North Hills Group Home, and to volunteer at a rehabilitation centre. This punishment changes Reef’s life for the better.
Bad things happen to good people. A Series of Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket, is a story about the orphans that are in a bad situation. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire parents died in a fire while Count Olaf is trying to steal their fortune. They escaped Count Olaf and got to safety for a little. They learned that bad things happen to good people too.
Into The Wild English Final “Into The Wild” is a partial biography written by Jon Krakauer describing how the body of Chris McCandless was found in the wilderness of Alaska. Mr. McCandless was a gifted athlete and scholar, who from an early age shows deep intensity, passion, and a strict moral compass. He discovered that his father had a second family while McCandless was growing up but wasn't told until he graduated high school. He wanted to leave society because to pursue a life of adventure and not apathy/routine while also trying to get away from his sleepwalker, money-driven/materialistic parents. He donated his $25,000 to charity, burned his wallet, drove his car to the middle of nowhere, and disappear in April of 1992.
Stephen Puleo wanted to tell the story of The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919, so he did. Puleo is an author, historian, university teacher, public speaker, and a communications professional. Some of his works are the “Boston Italians”, “A City So Grand”, and “Dark Tide”. While I was reading this book, I was amazed of how big and fast the Molasses was moving down the streets of Boston. You wouldn 't think of molasses moving fast.
The First Stone You can’t make everyone happy. Sometimes the decision of the judges only satisfy some people. In the novel The First Stone, by Don Aker, a young teen by the name Chad “Reef” Kennedy finds himself in a tough situation and his sentencing is being in rehab and doing community service. Reef is responsible for putting Leeza a young girl, in the hospital because of his actions. Since he is in rehab, many people wished he went to jail.
The book “In the lake of the woods”, written by Tim O’Brien, is about a Vietnam veteran and politicians story. The main character, John Wade, is a Vietnam veteran who was involved with a brutal massacre. John was also a politician, and in fear that the massacre he was involved with would affect his political career, John does everything he can to cover up this incident. During this time John's wife mysteriously disappears. John has an ambition throughout the story to cover up what happened to profit his own career.
The Glass Castle is about four children and their mom and dad, who struggle to get by. They go from day to day with little food and barely a roof over their heads. In this book, it shows how children overcome little guidance and abusive parents while growing up. Jaennette introduces us to her father in the beginning of the book, Rex Walls. He is a father who can't provide for his family because he can't keep a job and focuses more on himself than his children or wife.
Book Arrangement Into the Wild displays, a picture of Chris McCandless on the first page then follows with a map of his travel route to the Stampede Trail in Alaska. There is no table of contents, but there are chapters in the book there is also an epilogue. Also, there is an author's note on how he compiles the book. There are several other maps inside the book, so the reader can understand where McCandless is on his journey.
In 1996, 29,029 feet above sea level, a expedition to climb Earth's largest mountain went horribly wrong. In the autobiography, Into Thin Air, eight climbers lost their lives trying to descend from the top of the world making this the second worse fatality rate ever to occur on Mount Everest. To be able to successively climb Mount Everest, clients must be intellectually competent, which is one of the pillars of the Grad at Grad. Being Intellectually Competent means that students go above and beyond the expectation both academically and in every day experiences, while taking the knowledge students learn in class and present it into the community. In his investigative, nonfiction book, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer implies that even though most adolescents who participate in high-risk activities end up with serious consequences, occasionally, those activities are rewarding. This is explained throughout Krakauer’s book, showing Christopher McCandless’ journey across North America; John Waterman’s ascent of Mount Denali, and his mental unwinding; Gene Rosellini’s attempt to survive off the land; Carl McCunn’s adventure in the wilderness, Everett Ruess’s journey at the Davis Gulch; and also by describing Krakauer’s own adventure in Alaska (Krakauer). According to the article, “Why Everest?”, by Guy Moreau, “There have been over 230 deaths on the mountain.” People that put themselves in risky situations, should be permitted to rescue services no matter the price that needs to be paid. The expensive machines used to rescue people can give a profit. With the newly found technological advancements, rescuers should be able to save more people than ever. And lastly, unexpected, harsh conditions can throw off any climber’s experience and leave them with no other option but to rely on these services.
