Also, in Picture Bride, the author reveals through Mary’s actions, that even if you do everything in your power to make a person happy, they will still stab you in the back. If in life you are the type that will do anything for someone you care so much for, and then one day you discover the person has gone out of their way just to hurt you. Ever since Mary, the daughter of Hana and Taro, was a child she never developed a great relationship between her and her parents. She believed it was because her parents were born and raised in Japan, which means that they were taught differently than an American child would be taught. Japan is very traditional, so normally the woman stays home and the man provides for the family.
In the 19th century many debates raged on the correct way to showcase a women’s body in a painting. “What was the relationship between women’s moral and sexual nature?” (pg. 272), artist worked to find a balance between these two concepts. A successful combination of these two topics can be seen in the can be seen in Eclogue by artist Kenyon Cox. Even though none of Janie’s three marriages were perfect, I noticed that her third husband, Tea Cake, was the finest husband that Janie had throughout her lifetime. I can to this realization when Janie mentioned in the book that Tea Cake was her real first love. Throughout their twelve years of marriage, Tea Cake taught her to find ultimate happiness and understanding in herself.. Whereas Logan treated her like a pet and Jody silenced her, Tea Cake encouraged her personality and introduced her to new skills and experiences.
Especially since the word “perfect” was used to describe his appearance, it emphasized the awe one must feel in the presence of him. The author adds this description to
he early twentieth century was a wild, wild time – though we can 't immediately think of a time in American history that has been calm. Still, even by rowdy American standards, the first few years of the last century were crazy. Upton Sinclair was lucky enough to ride this wave of national dissatisfaction with the status quo straight to literary success. His novel The Jungle, an exposé of the meatpacking industry, became an enormous bestseller translated into seventeen languages within weeks of its publication in 1906. But while The Jungle has long been associated with food production (and its disgustingness), the book is actually a much broader critique of early twentieth-century business and labor practices in the rapidly growing cities of the United States.

In a time where social strictures denied most women a future in the field of visual arts, Harriet Hosmer defied all social convention with her large scale success in neoclassical sculpting. At a young age, Hosmer had already developed a striking reputation, one that qualified her to study abroad in Rome under the tutelage of renowned sculptor John Gibson. As if this opportunity wasn’t rare enough for women artists in her day, Hosmer’s outstanding potential earned her the luxury of studying from live models.6 The respect she gained from taking this unconventional route to her success is one that entirely transformed society’s perception of women. Not only did her unique story serve as a catalyst in the progression of gender equality, but she also hid symbolic messages within each of her sculptures to find a way to penetrate her beliefs of equality through to any soul.3 As the National Museum of Women in the Arts perfectly captures, “[s]he preferred Neoclassical idealism to more naturalistic trends and rendered mythological and historical figures, such as Oenone, Beatrice Cenci, and Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, with nobility and grandeur.
My work relates to Sherman’s in many ways, but the most important is that she inspired me to show one of the most common stereotypes of women. To begin with, my process of creating my photo and then drawing it was very difficult and easy at the same time. I started by trying to find where I wanted to take my photo. All I knew was that I wanted it to be somewhere with one light source, as shown in Sherman’s photos. I wanted to use a window, but I didn’t want just a regular window only because I felt that it would cause distractions.
Leslie Ventura REL 100 Final Paper: Jewish Wedding Society today is made up of a mosaic of different cultures and religions. Visitors to the U.S. can see the incorporation of many traditions and rituals from other countries. Throughout history there have been many refugees who leave their homelands which has led to the spread of different cultures and traditions around the world. For Jews, the spread of Judaism was caused by diaspora, or dispersion of people outside their countries, which happened several times in history. Even though Judaism is widespread, there is a consistency in the basic traditions and holidays that are celebrated.

This essay discusses transnational feminism in contemporary art and Reilly talks about her experience curating the art exhibit "Global Feminisms: New Directions in Contemporary Art," which presented a selection of young to mid-career women artists from a variety of cultures. The essay examines transformations in feminist theory and contemporary art practice and talks about artists Patricia Piccinini, Dayanita Singh, and Catherine Opie. Reilly really focuses on challenging First World Feminism that assumes "sameness" among women. Instead, the show and essay acknowledge the differences in the woman's lives. " In other words, this all-women exhibition aimed to be inclusively transnational, evading restrictive boundaries as it questioned the continued privileging of masculinist cultural production from Europe and the United States within the art market, cultural institutions, and exhibition practices."

1.2 Statement of Significance Art can do lots of things that can create powerful and great changes in ourselves.
