It was Martin Luther King Jr. who said that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” He said it almost 60 years ago, and it is still used today to suggest peaceful protest can be effective driving out hate with love. Non violent resistance as protest is effective because there have been results from the Kaepernick Movement, the Selma March, and the Black Lives Matter Protest. These movements have created many powerful and positive effects that have helped society. The Kaepernick movement had impact across the US and its sports teams. It created a voice for the voiceless and his critics just amplified his voice. His protest against oppression of people of color spread like wildfire from 48 NFL players to the high school level. The protests aren’t just in the NFL either, other sports include the NBA, the WNBA, NWSL, etc. His protest had many people talking and many people joined him, and are sitting for the anthem. They marched because only 2 percent of the black population in Selma could vote. They needed to be able to vote so they could put representatives in office to help solve their racial disparities. At this march, they had been told they could not pass several times and were faced with violence from white police officers and were screamed at by white onlookers on national television. Each time they did not give up and they remained peaceful throughout. This helped them achieve the Voting Rights Act of 1965. If they were violent this would have been met with twice the violence and they would not of achieved the Voting Rights Act. This Act signed by Lyndon B.
