In Kite Runner, Amir’s personality contradicts Hassan because Amir acted like a leprechaun as a child while Hassan was like a royal dog to Amir. Even though their personalities were different, they both went through tough times together and lost their innocence. Hassan first lost his innocence when Assef raped him in the alley because he refuses to give the kite to Assef: “He unzipped his jeans. Drop his underwear. He positioned himself behind Hassan. Hassan didn’t struggle. Didn’t even whimper. He moved his head slightly and I caught a glimpse of his face” (75-76). Amir also loses his innocence when he saw Assef rape Hassan. He thought he has seen the look that was on Hassan face, somewhere else. It was the look of a sheep, when Ali was slaughtering …show more content…

Baba had taught Amir different types of sins: “ ‘when you kill a man, you steal a life,’ Baba said. ‘You steal his wife’s right to a husband; rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. Do you see?’” (18). Even though, Baba had taught Amir what not to do in order to avoid committing a sin, Amir still does activities or act in ways that is consider as a sin. For example, when he didn’t help Hassan from the bullies and ran away. Also when he pretend that Hassan stole his birthday gifts (a watch and money) in order to get rid of Hassan and Ali from his household: “ ‘did you steal that money? Did you steal Amir’s watch, Hassan?’ Hassan reply was a single word, delivered in a thin, raspy voice: ‘Yes’” (105). At that moment, Amir steals Hassan’s truth by lying to not only Hassan himself, but also Baba and Ali. Although, Hassan wasn’t wrong to protect Amir, but he did commit a sin by lying and hurting Baba or Ali’s feelings. Khaled Hosseini may not mention much about Ali committing sins but he did commit a sin when he slices the sheep’s throat. Amir and Baba both lie to each other including Hassan and Ali to get away with misdemeanor. When Ali ask what was wrong with Hassan because all he does was sleep, Amir says he doesn’t know, even though he could’ve helped Hassan just by telling the truth to Ali: “ ‘After that kite tournament, he came home a little bloodied and his shirt was torn. I asked him what had happened and he said it was nothing, that he’d gotten into a little scuffle with some kids over the kite.’ I didn’t say anything. Just keep pushing the egg around on my plate. ‘Did something happen to him, Amir agha? Something he’s not telling me?’ I shrugged. ‘How should I know?’ (81). If Amir had told the truth to Ali, Hassan would have gotten help. Amir also shouldn’t have pushed Hassan away when Hassan tries to talk to Amir. Amir was a coward and acted like a coward because he wasn’t able to face Hassan without feeling guilty. If only Amir hadn’t ignore or make lies such as Hassan stealing his birthday presents, everything would still go well and Amir could’ve escaped Afghanistan with Hassan, Ali and Baba. Similar to Amir, Baba was also at fault because if Baba confesses that Hassan was Amir’s half-brother, Amir
