The quote from The Great Gatsby “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is proven true in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The characters, events that occur and overall theme help prove that once a person makes it past the bad, they are easily pulled back in. Amir is one of the characters that proves this true. He has an action filled childhood with many twists and turns. As he grows up, the action never seems to cease as he is faced with conflict after conflict.

The quote by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a great representation of this theme. Discrimination exists throughout the whole book between the two groups of people and just as the quote reads “so we beat on” Amir and Hassan continue to fight past their ethnic groups differences. Another key theme in The Kite Runner is sin and redemption. Baba always made sure Amir knew that theft was the only sin “Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft” (Hosseini 17). This lesson is one of the most important ones Baba teachers Amir. All of Amir’s life, this lesson from Baba has stuck in his head. Amir feels an immense amount of guilt after watching Hassan get raped and not saying a word about the event to anybody. Little does Amir know, Baba is so hard on him because of his own sin. Just after Baba died, Rahim Khan revealed to Amir that Hassan was his brother “Ali was sterile” (Hosseini 222). For thirty-eight years of his life, Amir has been lied to. Baba sinned everyday he lived by depriving Amir of information he deserved to know. Just as readers believed Amir and Hassan were becoming the best of friends, Hassan goes through the unimaginable “Assef knelt behind Hassan, put his hands on Hassan’s hips and lifted his bare buttox” (Hosseini 75). As Amir stands by, paralyzed from shock, he watches his friend get raped. This event corresponds with the quote from The Great Gatsby. Together Amir and Hassan have pushed past the bullies and differences in their cultures. This event in chapter seven puts them “borne back ceaselessly into the past” After finding out about Baba’s long kept secret and Hassan’s son, Amir decided it was his job to find Sohrab. Salaam alaykum said Amir as they knocked on the door of the orphanage “We’re searching for this boy” (Hosseini 252). When Amir arrived at the orphanage, the man who answered the door originally said he had never seen Sohrab. Amir beat on, pushing past the man's stubbornness to find out the truth. While talking with the head of the orphanage, Amir discovered that often times the truth hurts. Amir was “borne back ceaselessly into the past” when he was told a Talib official had come and bought Sohrab from the orphanage. Outraged, Amir had not given up and would continue to fight for Sohrab. Later on in the novel, it is discovered that the Taliban official that took Sohrab was the same man who raped Hassan years ago.
