Pollay holds a master’s degree in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University. He has held leadership positions at Yahoo!, MasterCard, Global Payments, and AIESEC. I have citizens who call or come into my office complaining about their water bill. They are usually not happy with what they have been told and want to speak to the city manager. They proceed in telling me the story. In the past, I have tried cutting them off, but I find it is better to let them tell their story. As Pollay advises, I do not take it personally. I lead them in the right direction and tell them I hope things work out. Sometimes the citizen will even say they are sorry for complaining and thanks me for listening.
