When it comes to the portrayal of literary work, many people prefer movies over books. Even though they both have similar content, movies tend to add or switch up details of the story version. This is to either gain a broader audience or make more money off of the entertainment. One comparison I want to discuss is the story of, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving and Tim Burton’s, Sleepy Hollow. There is a huge gap between the story, which came out in 1820 and the 1999 movie. Although the story and the movie has its similarities with the theme of the war and battle, it also has differences with the character portrayal and their outcomes, and how the story unfolds in events. The story written by Washington Irving, inspired the movie, but did not limit it. The story is about Ichabod Crane, a school teacher, whom faces an encounter with the Headless Horseman that haunts the town. It discusses more of his life story and little detail about the events leading up to the encounter. The story also adds how Ichabod falls in love with a lady named, Katrina Van Tassel, but is in battle with another jealous young man, Brom Bones. The …show more content…

There is an ongoing battle between Ichabod Crane and Brom Van Brunt (Brom Bones) for the heart of Katrina. Ichabod knew how much Brom liked her, however Ichabod was doing everything to beat him. As said in the story, “Ichabod, therefore, made his advances in a quiet and gently insinuating manner.”(Irving, para 30) He was winning the heart of Katrina without Brom even knowing. The movie has the same concept of Brom bones being one of Katrina’s suitors and how jealous he is of Ichabod. In addition, the theme of war takes place between the headless horseman and the towns residents. The headless horseman is this spirit who rides in on his horse and beheads the locals.
