At a distance two things may seem very different, but the more you look at the more you can see their similarities. In The Lightning Thief Percy Jackson discovers that Poseidon, a Greek god, is his father; therefore, making him a demigod. Percy then goes to a camp to learn how to use his powers and prepare for the journey of his life of stopping a dispute between the Olympians from turning into an all-out war on Earth. In The Island of Dr. Moreau Prendrick arrives on a mysterious island to find a doctor named Moreau and his assistant Montgomery. On the island there are half-animal half-human like creatures that practice a law that focuses on them being humans not animals. Percy lived in a world with two different realities of moral and immoral. Up until Percy was 12 years old, he knew the world as we know it, but then one summer he was introduced into a new world of gods and Greek mythology. Prendrick had a hard time differentiating between the human and animal characteristics of the beast folk. When he returns to civilized society he begins to see the people as part animal. He is living in the reality of when he was on the island and in actual society. When you’ve lived between two realities they can began to intertwine and get mixed up.
Primitivity relates to the first of something. Both book have an interpretation of something primitive. The Lightning Thief had to do with Greek mythology, which is one idea of primitivity. In The Island of Dr. Moreau, Dr. Moreau wanted to start a society with the vivisected animals that he turned more human. At the end of the book the Beast Folk go back to their primitive mindset of animals.
Both The Lightning Thief and The Island of Dr. Moreau share the themes of isolation, perception of reality, and primitivity. Although they share some of the same themes, they discover different aspects of them. At a glance both of these books seem very different, but at the root they share the same
