In the chapter, “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven,” the main character, Victor, describes what happens on his three-a.m. walk to 7-11. His goal was to purchase a Creamsicle and leave, but noticed his presence made the cashier nervous because of his darker complexion. Although Victor understood the cashier’s apprehension, he wanted to tease the cashier so at first, he jokingly stated that the weather was hot enough to make an individual crazy. This made the cashier a tad fearful, but he attempted to keep his composure while he helped Victor. Currently, he is living with his family in the Indian reservation after breaking up with his girlfriend and leaving the city. In the end Victor’s old girlfriend calls him and they forgive each other for the pain they have caused each other. Currently he feels embarrassed for once feeling ashamed of his grandparents and their old ways. His grandparents were slaves during the Civil War before being freed.
